As you may have read in my latest email update, our first homework was sent home on Wednesday. Homework will be due and collected each Wednesday.
The homework is a one-page document. It includes a calendar on one side, and instructions for our weekly homework projects printed on the other side. This document can be removed from your child's folder, if you wish to have it posted somewhere helpful at home, such as a refrigerator or bulletin board. We are presently entering Week 3 of Kindergarten, so the "My Name" project will be due next Wednesday.
We chose to format homework in this manner for several reasons. Firstly, we believe that the best learning happens when students are engaged, given the opportunity to be creative and innovative, have the support and involvement of family members, and develop lasting real-world connections between what is happening at school and what is happening at home. We also want to instill good habits for your young learners, being careful to not make homework stressful or punitive for anyone. Last year, we received tremendous feedback from families that the project-based homework was enjoyable, got several family members involved, was easy to manage over the course of one week, and students were eager to complete the tasks because they had FUN!
I hope your family enjoys homework time together! If at any time you require additional supplies or materials to complete a family project, please do not hesitate to let me know. We would be happy to share these with you and support learning in the home!
