Please be reminded that there will be NO SCHOOL on October 1st through October 13th. All classes will be back in session on Tuesday, October 14th. Several of those days are set aside for teacher meetings, professional development, and ILP meetings.
While the fall break is meant to be a time for families to reconnect, reflect and recharge, it is important that we support your child's development of good learning habits. While enjoying this extra time together, whether it be traveling or relaxing on the couch, please be sure to build in some time to practice early reading, writing and math skills.
Your student has been sent home with a Fall Break Tic-Tac-Toe Challenge, chock-full of learning activities directly tied to what we are doing in the classroom! You can see a copy below. The students have been reminded that a Tic-Tac-Toe 3-in-a-row, will win them a special prize. However, they must collect evidence of each activity completed, either in the homework journal provided or other paper/workbook from home. If your student is able to complete all nine activities for a Black Out Win, they will be awarded a super-de-duper special prize. ;)
When writing with your child, please be cognizant of his/her personal development as a speller, and encourage inventive or phonetic spelling. While it can be tempting to allow your child to copy text that has been written for he/she, this does not help your child form a connection between their thoughts/ideas, the sounds we speak when sharing those thoughts or ideas aloud, and what those sound symbols look like on paper.
When reading with your child, pause frequently and check for understanding. You can help foster a LOVE of reading by having fun with it! Any book can lend itself to rich language, social studies, science and math lessons! In our class, we have been practicing how to ask BIG questions. Below are some great sentence starters or stems to get your little one thinking! Here, the author has titled these BIG questions as THICK questions - meaning that they don't illicit LIGHT answers and require deeper thinking.
Thank you for all that you do.
